Hey there, amazing educators! Welcome back to Let's Chat Teaching, the podcast where we delve into all things teaching in the grades five to eight classroom. I'm your host, Nicole Sanders, a former classroom teacher turned online course creator, and today's episode is a bit different. We're diving into my own journey – from the hustle and bustle of the traditional classroom to the exciting world of educational entrepreneurship.

Now, I have to be honest with you; sitting down to record this episode was a tad nerve-wracking. Why? Because I'm about to open up and share my vulnerabilities, but I believe it's crucial for you to know the person behind the mic.

Let's rewind to a time before I even stepped foot into a university. After high school, I decided to take a detour and explore the world. I worked two jobs during my senior year, saved up, and embarked on a six-month adventure to Australia and Indonesia. Little did I know, this journey would plant the seed for my love of teaching.

In Australia, I had the incredible opportunity to teach drug, sex, and alcohol classes in high schools, connecting with youth and exploring various communities. It was a transformative experience that ignited a passion for teaching within me. The mentors I had during this time subtly nudged me towards considering a future in education and looking back, I can pinpoint that as the beginning of my love of teaching.

Fast forward, and I found myself back in Canada, starting a university degree with a focus on teaching. My experiences volunteering in classrooms and connecting with students solidified my belief in the power of education. Education equals choice, choice equals power, power equals freedom – this mantra, inspired by Oprah, resonated deeply with me, becoming the driving force behind my decision to become an educator.

Over the years, I navigated the challenging landscape of inner-city schools, facing the unique set of difficulties that come with teaching in such environments. The camaraderie among the staff was a beacon of support, and despite the hardships, I cherished the connections forged during this period.

However, the escalating challenges within the education system, particularly the tolerance of violence in the classroom, raised red flags for me. It became clear that the traditional classroom setting was no longer the right fit for my life, causing a significant shift in my career path.

All that to say, even though it wasn't the right fit for me anymore, I strongly believe that public education is vitally important for our students. Because of that, I knew that my journey in the education field wasn't over.

In 2021, armed with a desire to support teachers and a passion for entrepreneurship, I embarked on a new journey. My husband and I relocated, and I took the leap into creating educational resources for teachers through my Teachers Pay Teachers store, Apple Tree Resources. The goal was to offer practical and applicable professional development courses for grade five to eight teachers.

Now, I'm a full-time edupreneur, pouring my energy into developing resources, creating online courses, and hosting this podcast. It's a blend of my love for education and my newfound passion for entrepreneurship – a combination I never imagined would be so fulfilling.

This podcast, my venture into entrepreneurship, and my commitment to supporting educators all stem from a deep love for education. I want to bring a little more ease into your teaching day, to stand with you and walk alongside you in this sometimes overwhelming, but incredibly rewarding, journey.

Thank you for spending this time with me and for being a part of the Let's Chat Teaching community. I'm thrilled to have you here, and I can't wait to explore more teaching adventures together.

Until next week, keep shining, amazing educators!
